A week has passed... What did i do this week. Well, on Monday, Pn Zarina and I went to SMK Putra. It was a very pleasant day there, being well received by the teachers there even though our visit was not planned, actually we just went there to observe the "Titian Kasih" Programme. We were supposed to hold the same programme here, but when we got there, after making our rounds, we were told by one of the teachers there that the 'visit" to our school "might" be cancelled. Luckily we went to the school, if not, we would be preparing for something which would be cancelled. What can we say... nothing... . Still I am quite happy to be able to go there and watch the preparations. Another thing is i am also happy that i got to know a fellow teacher whose daughter is in our school, and i am teaching her daughter. Well, now i get to know her better, coz by knowing her mother, i feel closer to the daughter, my student. Before this i didn't really notice her because she is a quiet type of person, but now i can recognize her, know her name, even "see" her as I should. Actually nowadays teachers are too busy, having too many students, and too many teaching hours that they could not do everything as perfectly as they would want to do.
Another good thing that happened to me was now I realise that there are still many good samaritans in this world. My daughter's car had some problems along the Changlun Arau highway and if not for 2 good samaritans, she would be crying alone at the highway. It was a very lucky day for her.

Choosing which question to answer in CW, paper 1 SPM English
For me, if you are teaching weak or average students, may be it would be easier to teach and ask them to choose Narrative Essay. There are a few reasons why I say this..........
As mentioned by Fatimi Estar in her blog, it is better if you write a story because your errors (grammar, spelling, sentence structures and so on) will not be so glaring in a story compared to a factual essay.
In addition to that we should also write about something real and close to us. This is also true if we are going to write a speech. The best speech would be the speech that tells about our own experience and perception. By doing this , we will be able to touch the heart of the listeners since we are telling what we , ourselves, experience.
There is a related technique called Sheikh Fadzir's characteristic which we usein our school. Students are asked to memorize certain descriptions of the weather, night, day, stormy weather, characteristic etc. Then they are asked to think of certain stories .. then when you are given the CW question, you already have a general idea of what your essay is going to be, with all the description of the characters involved, the description of the weather - be it night or day, stormy weather etc.. You have to memorize all this. Given any phrases (intro or ending of a story), you just have to adopt the phrases that you have memorised and adapt them to your story. Walla.... now you got a very good narrative essay complete with detailed descriptions of the characters, weather ,etc...
This is similar to what Fatimi Estar said in her blog "Prepare a story in advance. Write a story about two pages length; do not write to long because it will make the examiner spend longer time to read and mark your essay, which is quite annoying. Ask your teacher to check the grammar and the sentence structure. Then, memorize everything. Make sure that when you enter the exam hall, you have a story in your mind. Do not go there empty-headed; you will waste a lot of your precious time thinking on what to write on the spot. When you get the question paper, what you have to do is to adjust and adapt the story in your head to the question. Usually the question will ask you to write "a story beginning with..." or "a story ending with...". So, be smart and creative."
But then, if you choose to answer the one word essay. It is also the next choice. The one-word essay is quite flexible as it allows you to decide which type of essay you are going to write about.
Take the topic ‘Beauty’. If you choose to write an expository essay, you can write about what women do to look beautiful, e.g. women’s quest for beauty through plastic surgery.
If you choose to write a narrative essay, you can narrate a story related to loss of outer beauty. And if you choose to write a descriptive essay, you can focus on describing things of beauty.

Common Errors when writing essays..
Common errors
Some common errors with directed and continuous writing are long introductions. An introduction should be one paragraph long. Some students tend to write two or three paragraphs. Sometimes you have many ideas but you have to be selective. You need to decide which to include and which to discard.
Some students often use incomplete sentences in their essays. Remember, every English sentence must have at least a subject and a verb, e.g. He ran. However, some students forget this and often use sentences without a subject or a verb.
Here are some examples:
i. The major cause speeding.
We can use such sentences in spoken English but not in the written form as the latter is more formal. This sentence can be written in several ways. One example: Speeding is one of the major causes of road accidents. (‘Speeding’ - subject, ‘is’ - verb, one of the major causes of road accidents - complement)
ii. My mother never lets me do the things I enjoy. For example, swimming, mountain climbing.
The second part of the sentence is incomplete. This sentence should be written, My mother never lets me do the things I enjoy such as swimming and mountain climbing.
iii. His partially grey hair and half moon glasses.
In this sentence, obviously something else is missing other than the verb. It should read, His partially grey hair and half moon glasses reminded me of my grandfather.
> Inconsistent use of pronoun
You should always check the expiry date of any food item you purchase. We must make this a habit whenever we go shopping.
Here the pronoun you is used in the first sentence but in the second it is changed to we. Remember to use the same pronoun throughout your essay.
> Incorrect placement of adverb ‘also’ with a modal verb
You also can cut down on sugar intake./ They also must get approval from the authorities/ We also should inform the authorities.
Here the adverb ‘also ‘ should come after the modal verb. It should read You can also…/ They must also…/ We should also…
> Incorrect usage of adverb ‘In conclusion’
Many students and adults make the mistake of using the phrase ‘As a conclusion’.
It should be ‘In conclusion’.

A very good morning to our beloved principal, Pn Laila Mohd Noor, senior assistants, teachers and friends. On this glorious morning, I, Gary Tan the recipient of this year’s “Best Student Award” am going to give a talk on “How to Become a Successful Student”. In my speech, I am going to share with you some tips on how you can be a successful student.
If you want to be successful, you must set goals. Research shows that people who set goals accomplish more than those who do not. In deciding your goals, ask yourself “What do I want to be?” and “What do I do to get there?” Besides, you must be motivated. When you are motivated you will have a strong desire to do well and to achieve your goals. In addition, you must pay attention in class. Listen actively and focus on what the teacher is teaching. If you have disruptive classmates, sit in front of the classroom, away from them. Always ask questions if you do not understand. Seek clarifications from your teachers or your friends if you are shy to approach the former.
Another important tip to being a successful student is to be organised. You can use a planner or notebook to write down all your assignments when they are given. This way you will not forget your homework, dates of tests or projects. Remember, if you are organised you will be well- prepared and you will have less stress. Moreover, you must complete your homework on time. Homework helps reinforce what you have learnt. It helps you understand and remember the information. You must prepare well for exams. A successful student is one who prepares for exams well in advance, and not at the eleventh hour. If you study consistently, you will have ample time for revision.
Friends, to be a successful student you must have diverse interests. You should take part in co-curricular activities in order to become a well-rounded person. These activities help develop leadership skills and teamwork besides instilling values like cooperation and tolerance. Discipline is an important aspect of our lives. No matter where you go or what you do, you will be subjected to rules and regulations. Hence, it is crucial that you obey the school rules.
Dear friends,
What is success if you lack the common courtesies in life? Remember, you must respect everyone. You must respect your parents, your teachers, the school staff and also your friends. You must respect other people’s feelings and opinions.
There are also several things you must avoid if you want to be a successful student. You must avoid wasting time. These days many teenagers spend hours on social networks such as Facebook or playing computer games. These are a waste of time and will not benefit you in any way. Remember, ‘Time and tide wait for no man’. Also, avoid skipping school. Some students feel that school is a waste of time as they can learn better from their tuition teachers. This is not true. The teachers in our school are experienced and well qualified. They are also experienced examiners and they know how to impart knowledge effectively.
I have to stop here. I hope you have found my talk helpful. Thank you for listening attentively.

What I can do is to pray for your happiness ..always... Both of you are always included in my prayers or "doa" every time I perform my prayers or solat.. I hope you will get the best of everything , I know you are getting it, and i know that both of you are always happy, and I am glad of that... Syukur, Alhamdulillah.... Thank You Allah for blessing my mom and dad.. by Mdm

Assalamualaikum Semua, Last weekend ada sahabat dengar ceramah Dasyatnya Doa Seorang Ibu oleh Ustaz Abdullah Mahmud. Dia ustaz untuk angkatan tentera malaysia last time. Jadi kalau tahu ibu / bapa sakit, berebutlah menjaga ibu / bapa kita. Besar sangat pahalanya. Victory not all that sweet
Analysis
By Joceline Tan
Tan Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud was returned to power in the 10th Sarawak election but it was a bittersweet win because it came with unprecedented losses in the Iban and Chinese seats.
IT was not quite the perfect storm that some people had predicted but the Sarawak election is a signal that the political landscape in the state has shifted in a way that its leaders had not foreseen.
Chief Minister Tan Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud was returned to power with a two-thirds majority but his victory was punctured by unprecedented losses.
A total of 16 seats fell in the rural heartland where Barisan Nasional used to hold sway while Deputy Chief Minister and SUPP president Tan Sri Dr George Chan's 30-year political career came to a crunching halt.
Dr Chan's stunning defeat by a young DAP lawyer topped the trail of losses of other SUPP candidates, leaving the party with a big question mark over its future.
Taib's party PBB remained on top of the game, retaining all the 35 seats it contested.
But even before the night was out, it was evident that Sarawak's politics would never be the same again.
Taib's coalition crossed the two-thirds margin shortly after 6.30pm, by which time five seats were confirmed to have fallen to DAP and PKR.
Before that, tweets from opposition politicians claimed they were on the way to smashing the Barisan's two-thirds majority.
A Perak leader tweeted that he had received a call to ask Pakatan Rakyat to get ready to form the Sarawak Government.
But it was one of those “Sept 16” claims.
However, there has been a Chinese tsunami of sorts in the urban centres where DAP took 12 of 15 seats contested.
The DAP was the big winner in Sarawak and scored astonishing victory margins in several seats.
DAP also made a clean sweep of all the seats it contested in the capital.
The Chinese in Kuching have made themselves heard loud and clear.
In fact, Dr Chan's defeat was a metaphor of the Chinese rejection of SUPP which they see as too much of a yes-man to Taib.
But the earth-shattering reality for Taib and his government was the erosion of support in the rural Iban seats.
Barisan not only lost Iban-majority seats but saw its victory margins in other Iban seats slide to an all-time low.
Politics in the rural hinterland is no longer what it used to be.
The Iban support can no longer be taken for granted.
Ba'Kelalan fell to Baru Bian, the indigenous lawyer who has been such a thorn in the side of Taib's administration.
PKR's win in Ba'Kelalan was expected but the party's win in Krian, another Iban seat, was a big blow because the defeated incumbent Datuk Peter Nyarok Entrie is the deputy president of SPDP, a Barisan component party.
DAP's ceramah in Kuching, Miri and the central basin of Sibu, Sarikei and Lanang had drawn massive crowds night after night.
Their Ubah mascot, a cute soft toy in the form of the Sarawak hornbill, was sold out and every night, there were more and more people wearing the signature red T-shirts at their ceramah.
Their grand finale in Kuching was the biggest rally that local folk had ever seen and the opinion that night was the Chinese tsunami would reach the shore the next day.
It was not the da xuan or big change that the party was hoping for but it has been DAP's most successful outing in Sarawak.
SUPP, the party that has represented Chinese interest all these years, will have to do a lot of soul-searching on how to recover and remain relevant.
Voter turnout has been quite low in the last few elections.
It was no different this time around despite the most intense electioneering in Sarawak history.
Some saw the low turnout as a form of silent protest.
The perception was while many voters did not want to vote for Barisan, they were also not keen on voting for the opposition DAP or PKR and definitely not for PAS which lost all the seats it contested.
This election has been all about Taib or Pa Mao the name by which he is known to all and sundry.
His 30 years in power, unfortunately, coincided with the ouster of Egypt's Hosni Mubarak.
His overstaying became such an awkward issue for his coalition government that he could not even celebrate his three decades in power.
The results suggest that the power transition will definitely take place.
Taib may even have to bring forward his transition plan to perhaps next year when PBB, of which he is president, is scheduled to hold its party election.
Taib has seen how he was openly criticised and ridiculed throughout the campaign, something which had never happened in any state election.
There is no denying the groundswell and it is not only against him but also those around him who have overstayed their welcome.
The Iban change of heart is also a slap in the face for PBB deputy president Tan Sri Alfred Jabu who represents the indigenous Pesaka wing of the party.
Jabu, who won narrowly, is the only top leader of Taib's generation who has yet to indicate whether he is making way after the polls. Regardless, he will be under great pressure to go after this.
In overstaying, Taib had given the basis for others to cling on. Those who have overstayed are what is known as the Ming Court generation, the group which came to power with Taib in the 1980s.
The signs of what would happen last night were already in the 2006 election and the Sibu by-election but those in power chose not see it.
The outcome in Sarawak is not exactly a disaster for Barisan but it spells trouble in time to come.
The political transition after this becomes more crucial than ever to Barisan's hold on Sarawak.
How Taib handles the transition which will impact the coalition's ambitions in the general election.

Visits by the inspectorate..
Two groups of Inspectorates visited our school this week... such a coincidence... well, i was the "lucky" or for some people , the "unlucky" ones... because I was observed twice, by two different groups.
As a teacher who has served for quite some time, 21 years , to be exact, i don't really feel the anxiety as what i felt many years ago.. For me, it's okay if you choose to come to my class. It is just that i regret that i couldn't use ICT in my lesson, and i have to "survive" with just some handouts to be distributed to my students.
Still i feel that any teacher would get high marks - marks filled in the inspectorate forms - if they had used ICT, be it power points, videos etc. This is because the lesson would be more interesting, of course, but that doesnt happen in our school coz the use of LCD is limited, only 4 rooms are available to use ICT... Pity the students, how unlucky of them to bear with us teachers who teach using chalk and talk...
Another thing that would make inspectorate happy is for us teachers to begin our lesson with a good set induction and since mine is an english lesson, make sure students talk a lot..ie. do most of the things(writing, talking, reading etc) done in the class. It should be students' centered, not teacher centered.
Last but not least, make sure your record book is up to date. It should be complete with all the syllabus, scheme of work, students' name list, marks...etc.. you name it.
Well , good luck ... and be happy and ready always to be observed :-)

Hikmah membaca surah Al-Kahfi....

TIps to get intelligent child
Rasulullah S.A.W. telah menggariskan empat tahap mendidik anak iaitu:
• Mengemas bilik sendiri termasuk meja belajar.
• Tatacara makan mengikut sunnah nabi
• Cara belajar yang berkesan
• Ingat sentiasa menutup aurat apabila keluar dari rumah
• Keselamatan jalan raya
• Tanggungjawab melindungi adik-adik.
2. Kaedah Bercerita
Ibu bapa hendaklah berusaha menjawab semua persoalan.
a) Jantina

How to identify and use feeding bottles
It is shocking news... make sure you do not use the polycarbonate bottles when feeding your babies... or if you do... follow the given instruction carefully...
(SOURCE : NST March 15)
The Health Ministry is distributing pamphlets on how to identify polycarbonate baby-feeding bottles containing Bisphenol A (BPA) and guides on how to use BPA-free polycarbonate bottles. Listed below are some of the ways to identify polycarbonate baby feeding bottles
- A polycarbonate feeding bottle is hard and transparent.
- It can be identified through the plastic classification codes found on the bottom of the bottle as follows:
a. Number 7
b. Number 7 and PC
c. Number 7 and others
- BPA-free bottles are usually labelled as "BPA-free".
Listed below is the guide on BPA bottle usage
- Sterilise the bottle following the instructions on the label or those provided by the manufacturer. If none, the bottle should be submerged in boiling water for five to 10 minutes.
- Avoid pouring hot water directly into the bottle when preparing milk.
- Use appropriate cleaning utensils, such as a soft sponge and brush, to avoid scratching the surface of the bottle.
- Check the inner surface of the bottle regularly. Replace if scratches are found or the feeding bottle is spoilt. Feeding bottles, even those without scratches, should be changed every six months.
- There are several alternative baby feeding bottles in the market made from polypropylene, polyethersulfone, polyyamides as well as glass.

Tanda-tanda KIamat...

SPM 1119 Section C
SPM English by JUGDEEP KAUR GILL
Today we will take a look at Section C of the SPM 1119 paper. This section, which carries a substantial 25 marks, is divided into two parts, reading comprehension and summary writing. 10 marks are allocated for reading comprehension and 15 marks for summary writing.
Guidelines for reading comprehension
1. Read the whole passage through once to get a general idea of what the passage is about. Do not worry if you come across unfamiliar words. Sometimes, it is not necessary to understand every word you read.
2. Do read the passage a second time, if necessary. The second reading helps you take in the details and improve your understanding.
3. Read the questions carefully. Use cue words in the questions to help you answer the questions. These can be the “wh” words (what, when, where, why, who, whose, how) and action verbs (identify, find, list).
4. Questions sometimes contain words found in the passage. Use these words to help you identify the part of the passage where the answer can be found.
5. You do not have to answer questions in complete sentences (look at the sample answers given).
6. You can lift words, clauses or sentences from the passage to answer questions. You do not have to use your own words unless you are told to do so. Moreover, there is a danger in paraphrasing – you might alter/distort the meaning expressed in the passage and hence lose precious marks.
7. For questions on vocabulary, if you are asked for a word, then give only ONE word and nothing else. Make sure you spell the word correctly. If you are asked for a phrase, then give the relevant phrase. If you copy the sentence where the word or phrase are found, you must indicate the chosen word or phrase by underlining it or putting it within quotation marks.
8. Some questions require you to use your own words and you must do so.
9. Do pay attention to the tense (and sometimes pronoun) used in the questions when formulating your answers.
Pitfalls to avoid
1. Do not give more than the required information. Sometimes, students copy chunks from a passage, giving two or more sentences. This only highlights their weakness – failure to understand the question and/or text.
2. Do not give two or more answers to a question. Some students write down all the possible answers to a question just to be on the safe side.
3. Do not waste time paraphrasing answers unless you are asked to do so.
Summary writing
The question on summary writing is based on the same text used for reading comprehension. This should be a boon as you would be familiar with the text after several readings. Despite this, many students are not comfortable dealing with summary writing.Their fears stem from their inability to identify informtation relevant to the answer. Some are also worried that they may not be able to put the information together into a coherent paragraph. Weak students have an additional problem to grapple with – language. While these concerns are genuine, there is no reason to fret as these problems can be easily overcome with proper guidance and help from teachers.
Remember that summary writing in the context of this paper is largely a reading skill (as you are required to select relevant information in the text) with a bit of writing thrown in (as you have to string the points together into a unified text). The task is made easier for you as you do not need to summarise the whole text, only certain aspects (maybe one or two). Therefore, it is crucial that you read the question carefully and consider what information is relevant.
The allocation of marks for summary writing is as follows: 10 for content and 5 for language. Usually, there are more than 10 content points but you should be able to identify at least 10. I always advise students not to worry too much about paraphrasing. You should focus on getting marks for content, not language.
Guidelines for summary writing:
1. Read the question carefully. Ask yourself: “What am I required to summarise?”
2. Mark the first and last lines of the passage you are asked to refer to.
3. Then select information that is relevant to your answer. To do this, underline the relevant lines or ideas as you read the text. Always ask yourself: “Is this...” (For the summary below, you would ask: “Is this a reason tigers have become extinct? or Is this a measure that should be implemented?”
4. Look through the lines/ideas you have underlined. Sometimes an idea is repeated in another line by way of paraphrasing. Ask yourself, is this a repetition?
5. Summarise these ideas. You can combine ideas by combining phrases or sentences, or you may want to paraphrase ideas/sentences. However, make sure your sentences are complete sentences and not fractured bits and pieces.
6. If you cannot paraphrase ideas, see if there are words in the text that you can replace without affecting meaning. For example, you can use a pronoun to replace a noun.
7. If you are a weak student, do copy the complete sentence. This way, you will not lose marks for content or language.
8. Begin the summary with the 10 words given and remember that the three dots after the tenth word mean you have to complete the sentence with some relevant information from the text.
9. Organise the ideas/points in the manner in which they are found in the text. Do not waste time trying to rearrange ideas.
10. Adhere to the word limit. Writing more than the required number of words will not get you any marks. Anything far too short of the word limit means you lack content.
11. Pay attention to the tense (and sometimes pronoun) used in the given 10 words.
12. Write the summary in one paragraph. Some students are in the habit of drawing columns to facilitate counting of words. This is perfectly fine but do write your final draft in one paragraph.
Pitfalls to avoid
1. Do not include information not found in the text.
2. Do not include your own ideas or opinions.
3. Do not spend too much time paraphrasing as you might end up losing marks for content unless you can do so without altering/distorting meaning.
4. Do not repeat ideas. Sometimes, an idea is repeated in the text and you may not notice it as it may have been paraphrased.
5. Do not include material from other lines in the text.

DESCRIPTIVE WRITING
Techniques in Descriptive Writing
• Use details to make your descriptions come alive.
• Focus on evoking the senses. (sight, sound, smell, taste and touch)
• Nouns, adjectives and verbs help the reader see and feel things.
• A descriptive essay need not be boring and monotonous. Make use of a lively tone – show your own feelings, responses and reactions and let the reader feel them too.
• Describe different aspects. If you are describing a person, do not limit your description to the person’s physical appearance. Include a detailed description of the person’s character and personality and how other people react to him/her. Include a detailed paragraph of an incident which highlights one of these aspects.
Before you begin writing a descriptive essay, you need to identify what you want to describe.
Consider the following topic:
My favourite teacher
If you are going to write about a favourite teacher, you might want to include his/her physical appearance. When describing his/her physical appearance, you can provide a general description of him/her or focus on important certain aspects which define his/her character. An essay of this nature would not be complete without a description of his/her qualities and how he/she interacts with his/her students.
Look at the two extracts below.
Extract 1
Mr L was my English Literature lecturer. He was thin and of average height. He was boyish looking. He spoke with an unusual accent. He was also quite sarcastic and some of the students did not like this. He did not like students coming in late to class. Some of us loved him but others hated him.
Extract 1 is a simple description of the teacher. Although there are several adjectives, the description is somewhat dull as the structures used are simple and repetitive.
Extract 2
The first time I entered his class, I, like many of the other students, was charmed by his boyish looks. A quick calculation told us that he was in his twenties. His straight black hair fell across his forehead when it was slightly long and his clear complexion enhanced his looks. For a Chinese, he had unusually big eyes and quite a sharp nose. He was always welldressed in a rugged sort of way. He was not outrageously handsome but there was something in him which definitely made him attractive His unusual accent mesmerised some of us but his sarcasm did not

Literature - Novel - Answering Technique
Assalamualaikum wrt
One major worry in answering F3 literature questions will be the novel question. How do you answer them?
well, the most important thing is you must have finished reading the novel. That is very important
The second thing is , make sure you know the five important elements in novel which are character, moral values, themes, plot and setting. All these are actually inter-related.
If you are able to answer the character question for example, you should without any problem be able to answer questions on moral values and themes.
To be able to do that, you must analyse every chapter and find ,for instance, the main characters and his traits. What did he do - the events that happened . Then asked what is the lesson you have learnt after reading the event. That will be about moral values and themes. You have to know the event in detail to be able to answer the literature question. That is why your teacher always ask you whether you have finished reading the novel or not.
If you know the events that happened in every chapter, then you have mastered the plot... the events that happened. When you know the event, you will then realised that you like that character. Then let's say that if the question ask why do you admire that character, maybe you want to say , I like him because he is brave. You must be able to relate the incident that shows he is brave. Tell the story of what happened ... in details.....
The most important thing is , you are able to give reasons and evidence (the details of what happened)..
Thus, in other word, you have to read in order to be able to describe what actually happened in detail.
READ THE WHOLE BOOK... DON'T JUST RELY ON WORKBOOK. WORKBOOK IS ONLY HELPFUL AFTER YOU HAVE FINISHED READING THE NOVEL....
So... what are you waiting for...... Start reading ...NOW!!

Granda is given to lapses in memory (putting Rory’s homework down the rubbish chute and the rubbish in Rory’s school bag) and completely irresponsible behaviour (setting fire to his coat at a Parents’ Evening), but he has a generous heart and plenty of charm. Rory acts as his carer until there is a fire in the flat and the authorities decide to separate them. However, Rory is determined that they will stay together and they embark on an escape but with their faces on every television screen and in every newspaper, this is not so easy. Their journey is full of surprise betrayals and unexpected friends as they attempt to evade the authorities and eventually track down the man who walked out on them.
PLOT SUMMARY
Chapter 1
Readers are introduced to Rory and his Granda as they wait for Dr Nicol in the waiting room. The doctor is concerned that Rory is too young to take care of his grandfather. However, Rory is aware that there are only two of them in the family.
Chapter 2
Granda has a failing memory; always misplacing things. Rory has the sole responsibility of taking care of Granda like buying him his lunch every day.
Chapter 3
Rory sacrifices some of the things he likes for Granda. He gives up football so that he can be at home with his Granda. Rory’s worry is that if Granda is put into Rachnadar, they would be separated. Rory’s dad had left them many years ago and Granda is very disappointed with his son, not wanting to see him again.
Chapter 4
Granda is very popular with Rory’s friends and meets Mrs. Foley for the first time. Granda accidentally sets fire to his and Mrs. Foley’s coats at the school’s Parents’ Night.
Chapter 5
Val Jessup, a social worker is assigned to take care of Granda and Rory. Darren’s mum and Mrs. Foley are both worried for Rory and are glad of the extra help they were going to receive. However, Granda has a little accident in the flat and is taken to the hospital.
Chapter 6
Granda has suffered from smoke inhalation and has to be hospitalised. Rory pleads to the Big Man to make Granda wake up. Val Jessup is nervous to let Rory live in the flat alone and drives him to the children’s home at Castle Street.
Chapter 7
Rory goes to the home because he has no choice and he thinks that it will be for only one night – till his granda is out of the hospital. Tess, a young inmate of the home, terrifies Rory with her bad behaviour.
Chapter 8
Granda admits that he had forgotten that the chip pan was on the stove, hence the fire in the flat. He tries to appease Rory by saying that he would get better soon. However, he is upset that his grandson is in the Castle Street home.
Chapter 9
Although Rory loves his grandfather, he is slightly annoyed with him as well because of the accident; he had landed himself in the hospital because of that and now Rory is in a children’s home. Rory goes back to the flat with Val and collects Granda’s medication. There, Rory realises that he wants to return home. Granda feels the same too.
Chapter 10
Rory is given the idea that Mrs Foley might foster Rory. Rory goes to the hospital to find that Granda is not there anymore.
Chapter 11
Granda has been shifted to Rachnadar. Val Jessup tells Rory that he is just a boy and that he cannot take care of Granda anymore.
Chapter 12
Granda is very upset to be sent to the home and it breaks Rory’s heart to see him cry. At Castle Street, Rory fights with Tess. Rory becomes exasperated when Granda retreats further and further into a shell while at Rachnadar and at school, the idea of being fostered by Mrs Foley worries him. Life is certainly unpleasant in Castle Street when Tess becomes increasingly uncontrollable. Rory decides that the only way is to run away with Granda.
Chapter 13
The Great Escape. Darren offers the use of his mom’s caravan and Rory plans the escape with great detail. Granda relies on Rory to get out of Rachnadar.
Chapter 14
Granda is like a little boy, allowing him to be led; safe in the knowledge that Rory would look after him. He is happy to be in the caravan and decides that he is indeed a lucky man to deserve a boy like Rory. Rory has done all of this so that they could be together. He realises that he would never let anyone separate them.
Chapter 15
Happy in the caravan, Granda recovers his old self.
Chapter 16
While fishing, they meet strangers and Granda is prejudiced when he calls them “tinkers”. As Granda’s health improves and both of them are happy, Darren sends Rory a text message saying that the authorities are after them.
Chapter 17
Rory prepares Granda for another move away from the police but as they move through the woods, the strangers whom they had met the day before, reach out and help them.
Chapter 18
Rory has no choice and allows them to lead. They are taken to an older caravan camp and Rory meets Tyrone and his family. Tyrone’s mom responds that they had helped them because it was Rory that they had wanted to help.
Chapter 19
They are taken care of well in Sammy’s camp. While there, they realise that they are the top story on the Scottish news as a boy and his grandfather on the run. Apparently, the authorities are worried about Granda whose health is a real concern. Granda decides that he would rather die of cold and hunger as long as he is free.
Chapter 20
Granda and Rory are worried that Sammy would get into trouble by helping them. But Sammy insists that he did not kidnap them and that they are not escaped convicts. Rory learns never to be judgemental of people.
Chapter 21
The runaways enjoy the birthday party in Sammy’s brother’s place. Ruby reads Rory’s future and predicts that he would meet people who would help him; some of whom he would not be able to trust. He would certainly find what he is looking for but would face a terrible sadness before that.
Chapter 22
The public has mixed responses over Rory and Granda’s running away. Ruby indicates that people are taking sides about them, arguing about the rights and wrongs of their case. Rory realises that they would have to be on the move again. Sammy suggests that he drives them to Dundee so that they can take a train to Glasgow to be with family friends who would provide them with shelter and time to think.
Chapter23
In the train, Rory realises that they have been recognised and alights at an earlier station. When Granda goes to the toilet, Rory is bullied by a young man who recognises him. Granda beats the latter with a bottle and decides that he will steal a car to escape.
Chapter 24
Granda seems an expert at stealing cars and his driving scares Rory. They stop at the lay by to have some rest.
Chapter 25
The runaways meet Rab when they stop to buy petrol. He offers them help.
Chapter 26
Rab says that he wants to help them because Rory and Granda are not criminals. He allows them the use of his flat and seems kind and concerned. Though pale and tired, Granda says that he is alright as long as he is with Rory. Rory prays for help because he realises he needs someone to help him. Again TV newsflashes show that the public is very much on their side and Rory gets to know that his Granda’s son, his father, has been traced to Liverpool.
Chapter 27
The television news states that neither Rory nor his grandfather have attempted to contact Jeff McIntosh in Liverpool. Rab encourages Rory to take his grandfather to his son.
Chapter 28
Rab has a grand idea to make sure that they get to Liverpool. A whole line of people are going to take them to Rory’s dad and Granda comments that the world is indeed wonderful after having experienced so much kindness.
Chapter 29
Annie drives them into England and leaves them with Norma and Nicola. The latter admires Rory for what he has done. Granda agrees but his mood changes when he finds out that they are going to his son in Liverpool.
Chapter 30
Granda refuses to go and for the first time Rory is frustrated. He had hoped that his father would take over the responsibility of Granda but Granda thinks that it would hurt Rory too much if his father would leave them again. Rory begins to hate his father and Granda consoles him by saying that they have never needed him and that they do not need him now. Nicola rings up to tell Rory that the police are coming and that they would have to move on.
Chapter 31
It is the second escape; both of them run out into the dark. Granda is tired and they both stop to rest and eventually sleep off at a stone bus shelter. Prior to that Granda says that if he was to die, he would as a happy man. On awakening, Rory is not able to awaken his grandfather and is afraid that he may be dead.
Chapter 32
Rory runs for help and remembers Ruby’s prophecy about the terrible sadness. Help comes immediately and the police introduce him to his father.
Chapter 33
Granda is not dead. He is hospitalised and recovers eventually. Rory is reunited with his dad and his family. He has two little sisters who endear themselves to Granda. His dad asks to be given another chance to prove that he can be a good dad and a good son again. Rory has found what he was looking for and realises that if anything happens to his Granda he will not be alone again. He is thankful to all who have helped them on their journey. He is very happy that he, Granda and his family are together again.

It is very important that you get A or A+ in English 1119..
Last saturday, i went to an education carnival with my daughter. I found out that it was quite interesting and educational. There , we learned that English is very important to be admitted to courses that you like such as engineering, medicine, etc etc... you need to get at least A- in SPM to be admitted in such courses. Failure to get A+ or A will deny you from getting scholarship. I hope that students esp SPM students will realise this.. realise that they have to score not only in science subjects but also English in order to get a place in their favourite universities....

Literature - QWERTYUIOP
TO my students esp Syazri or zack...
Here's something on QWERTYUIOP ... (Compliments to CDC, MOE)Hopefully all of us will benefit from this info..
Synopsis
‘QWERTYUIOP’ by Vivien Alcock is about a young graduate named Lucy Beck who has just finished her ‘O’ levels at Belmont Secretarial College. Being a slow learner herself, she has no confidence that she will find a job. Fortunately, she is offered a job by Mr. Ross, the Manager of Ross and Bannister’s. During her first day, she encounters many peculiar incidents. Later, she finds out that there is a spirit lingering around the office who is adamant in holding on to her position as the company’s secretary. Towards the end of the story, Lucy tries to get rid of the spirit that has been haunting that place for many years by putting the spirit at peace.
SETTING
The story revolves around two main settings: Lucy’s house which she shares with her mother and her Uncle Bert, and the office of Ross and Bannister’s where Lucy works as a secretary.
CHARACTERS
Lucy Beck : She is a young, shy and insecure graduate of secreterial studies. She is
dissatisfied with her current life and is determined to improve it. She
obtains a position with Ross and Bannister’s, only to find that the
position comes with a chilling secret.
Ghost of Ms. : She was the previous employee of Ross and Bannister’s. She is
unwilling to Bloome let go of her position and continues to defend her
post, even after her demise.
Lucy’s mother : A housewife who lives a hard life. She has to support her brother.
Uncle Bert : Depends on his sister for support. He is also a drunkard.
Harry Darke : Ross and Bannister’s handyman. He is an old man who has been
working with the company for years.
Mr. Ross : The younger partner of the company.
THEMES
Possible themes that can be found in the short story are determination, possessiveness, loyalty, loneliness, commitment, the supernatural, and compassion.
DETERMINATION:
Despite the supernatural nature by which Ms. Broome badgers and demoralises Lucy, she shows no signs of giving in to her demand. Instead, she is steadfast in defending her position as the secretary.
POSSESIVENESS:
Not even death could part Ms. Broome from what she feels is rightfully hers. She continues to haunt the office through her electronic typewriter.
LOYALTY:
As with her possesiveness towards her job, Ms. Broome was also extremely loyal towards Mr. Bannister. Even after she passed on, her spirit continued in its endeavour to serve her employer.
LONELINESS:
Loneliness can be a strong influence in a person’s life. Ms. Broome had no life outside of her office. That made her more possesive of her position in the company; a possesiveness that went beyond the grave.
COMMITMENT:
This attribute can be clearly seen in both Lucy and Ms. Broome. Both are extremely committed to their profession.
THE SUPERNATURAL:
It is interesting that such an integral character in the story happens to be an ethereal entity. Yet this theme is rather prominent in the story.
COMPASSION:
This theme holds water especially in the final confrontation between Lucy and Ms. Broome. It is not through hatred nor coercion that Lucy manages to outsmart Ms. Broome, rather, it was through compassion and understanding of Ms. Broome’s intentions.
MORAL VALUES
• Do not judge a person merely through credentials or qualifications
• We must be committed and responsible to our vocation or profession
• We must value our family.

Scoring high in directed writing
Scoring high in directed writing
SPM ENGLISH: By JUGDEEP KAUR
However, candidates should not worry unnecessarily as the question on Directed Writing is quite manageable.
Given appropriate guidance, even candidates who are linguistically weak should be able to handle this question.
What makes this question manageable? Firstly, candidates do not have to worry about what to write as they are given help with content.
The content is provided in the form of several points and candidates need to rewrite the points in the form of sentences without distorting the meaning.
Candidates can score full marks for content if they are able to use the information given in grammatically sound sentences, irrespective of the sentence type or length.
Likewise, it is also easy to obtain marks for format if candidates have been exposed to the formats of the different text types which are usually tested.
Secondly, this question does not demand much linguistically unlike the questions in the continuous writing section.
Thirdly, the question is usually set around the experiences of students. Hence, there is no reason for candidates not to attempt this question.
The allocation of marks for this question is as follows — 15 marks for content and 20 marks for language, bringing it to a total of 35 marks.
The marks for format, which can vary between one and three marks depending on the text type, are included in the 15 marks allocated for content.
