Yesterday I had a chance to interview students who would be going overseas... a trip to Vietnam. There are many comments that I can say as an interviewer.
What many interviewers would like to see in the interviewee is bravery. Candidates should be brave and confident with themselves. Their confidence must be shown in their attitude when they are interviewed. The first thing that an interviewer assess is whether the candidate can make an eye contact with the interviewer. I do not know why but some students are quite nervous or maybe it is their style not to make eye contact with the interviewer. They will be looking everywhere but not at the interviewers' face. Who are they talking to? Who are the listeners? When you present something , you want people to listen and understand what you are presenting , therefore you must look at the listeners' face to see whether they understood or not what you are saying. If they look confuse , you might want to elaborate further or justify your reasoning by giving other examples.
Your ability to speak fluently in English is a bonus but not necessarily the main criteria to get excellent result in an interview. This is because interviewers would also want to see that you have the ideas and are able to defend your statement or opinion. There are candidates who are not that good but they try their best to defend their ideas when their opinions are refuted.
In conclusion, the best way to succeed in an interview is to be confident in your presentation. Look at the interviewers' face - have eye contact with them. Give reasons, elaborate, defend your ideas. Being able to defend your statement by giving good reasoning is a bonus for you. Being proficient in English Language is definitely a ticket for you to achieve your goal. Make sure you have a wide vocabulary so that you do not have to take a long time to think of the right word to use. Writing a journal would be a good practice to enable you to get all the vocabulary you need to describe something - be it your experience, a thing, or giving opinion. Lastly, it is also a good thing to bring all your certificates with you so that the questions asked by the interviewer will be something related to what you have done to deserve the certificates.
All in all, good luck in your interview. Remember that you might fail in this interview, but there are other interviews in the future -- so be prepared for that too.... Do not be so frustrated , work harder, and succeed the next time... Happy fasting... and may Allah bless us all... insyaAllah... Amin.
