Catch Us If You Can - Write about a character who shows determination.

A character who shows determination in the novel , Catch us if you can, is Rory. This novel is mostly about the determination shown by a young boy , Rory, who is determined to escape the possibilities of being separated from his Granda who has looked after him since he was a little baby.

Rory is determined to take care of his Granda even though many people have suggested that Granda be put into a home for the elderly.
For example, Darren's mother .....
In other words,  by putting Granda in the old folks' home, Rory would be able to lead a usual life like any other teenagers.
However, Rory will not even discussed the matter. He would be very angry if somebody ....

In addition , Rory is very determined to care for Granda because Granda is the only family he has.
To make sure they are not separated , he really takes care of Granda's need.
For example,  he hides Granda's pipe before Granda goes to bed so that .... .
He also makes sure Granda takes his pills on time.
He even goes back at lunch time to buy Granda two hot pies...

Rory is also determined to be with Granda at all times.
A fire occurs at their apartment when Granda tries to cook something to please Rory. . The incident results in the two of them being separated. Granda is put in Rachnadar, the old folks' home, while Rory has to stay in Castle Street Home. Granda says that Rachnadar is a place where they put old folks that nobody wants. Rory is afraid that Granda will be dead inside after finding his grandfather getting so upset to be there." It hurts him when he heard Granda saying that  he would run away if he was younger. After being in Castle Street home  for ______ days and getting bullied by Tess, Rory decides to escape.

Rory is very determined to make the Great Escape. He plans the event in  3 days.
He plans on the place to stay after the escape with the help from Darren. Darren gives him the key to his mother's caravan.
Besides, he also thinks of bringing Granda's clother.....
He also plans on how to escape from Rachnadar. .....

When the police came to Darren's caravan, Rory takes the necessary action to bring Granda away from the caravan. He knows that Granda is not really well but he is determined to be together. So, Rory..................................

In conclusion, we can say that Rory is definitely a character who really shows determination. If not for this characteristic, he definitely would have been separated from his grandfather and he himself would live alone in Castle Street Home with the other orphans.

Bersedekah ....

Pahala Sedekah Untuk Yang Meninggal

Diriwayatkan dari Aisyah ra. : seorang lelaki berkata kepada Nabi Muhammad Saw,“ibuku meninggal tiba-tiba dan aku berpikir jika ia masih hidup ia akan memberikan sedekah. Apabila sekarang aku akan
memberikan sedekah atas namanya, apakah ia akan memperoleh pahala?” Nabi Muhammad Saw memberikan jawaban yang membenarkan.

KEKAYAAN MELIMPAH - TANDA KIAMAT

diriwayatkan dari Abu Hurairah ra. : Nabi Muhammad Saw. pernah bersabda,
"tidak akan datang hari Kiamat hingga kekayaanmu berlimpah sedemikian banyaknya yang membuatnya takut, karena tidak akan ada orang yang mau menerima zakatnya dan orang yang kepada siapa
zakat itu akan diberikan, akan menjawab, 'aku tidak membutuhkannya'"

Nabi Muhammad Saw Tidak Dapat Memberi Syafaat Kepada Orang Yang Tidak Membayar Zakat

menyampaikan perintah Allah kepadamu’”.

Being old....

Alone in His Twilight Years

When I entered the room, I saw him looking forlornly out of the window. His once clear and sparkling eyes were dimmed, his eyesight failing. As he recounted to me the story of how he ended up in an old folk’s home, tears coursed down his wrinkled cheeks.
He had once been rich. Born into a middle-class family, he had worked hard and established himself as one of the leading businessmen in town. Alas, in his pursuit of wealth and career advancement, he had neglected his wife and children, spending hours away at work, slogging, entertaining clients and just being busy making money. True, he provided for his family and gave them the luxuries that money could afford. But he was hardly with them. Their birthdays, school sports days and concerts went by unnoticed.
One day, after years of taking care of the children single-handedly, his wife packed her bags and left him, leaving the children behind. Not knowing how to take care of them, he sought the help of a distant aunt. Initially he visited them frequently but as his business expanded, he only visited them occasionally. His children’s upbringing was left entirely to the aunt. The monthly requests for the children’s expenses, however, never failed to arrive. They came promptly, on the first of every month.
Somehow, fate has a strange way of working. One day he found himself cheated out of his wealth and property by the ‘aunt’ to whom he had entrusted the care of his children. He wasn’t left penniless, though. But the bitter pill was too much for him to swallow. He was devastated and this affected his will and enthusiasm for his business. He carried on working but everything became merely a routine to him.
At sixty-two, forced to retire due to health problems, he found himself lonelier than ever. His medical bills depleted him of whatever savings he had but pride kept him from going to his children for help. Left with almost nothing to live for, except his firm belief in God, he decided to spend his final days in an old folk’s home. He reasoned that at least he would have company and not feel so lonely.
However, at a time when there were not so many old folk’s homes around, he found that he could not gain acceptance into an existing one. He could not afford the expensive nursing homes, yet he was ineligible to stay in any of the old folk’s homes as priority was given to the poor and those with no family. He wasn’t exactly poor. Neither was he without a family. And thus began his dilemma and the start of countless rejections from old folk’s homes.
Finally, noticing that his savings were running low, he swallowed his pride and sought the help of Sam, an old friend, to contact his children. After weeks of anxious waiting for news from Sam, he was told of his children’s whereabouts. Filled with renewed hope, he made contact with them. To his utter dismay, his hopes were crushed. His children, busy with careers and families of their own, had no time for him.
However, his youngest son, a bachelor, remembered his father and took him in. Unlike his older siblings who were doing well, he was struggling to make ends meet. Despite earning a meager salary, he welcomed his ageing father to his home. The old man gratefully moved in and stayed with his son for two months. Then, realizing the financial burden he was placing on his son, he decided to try his luck again at the old folk’s homes.
He wrote to the old folk’s homes, explaining his predicament. After countless letters, he was finally accepted by a home. When he received that news, he said, he felt a great burden lifted from his shoulders. As he said that, he smiled. And there was a faraway look in his eyes, as if reminiscing the days gone by.

This is a story I found years ago, but I cannot remember when and where I got the story. I would like to share this with friends in the hope that we would realised our duties to our parents.

Local grads not up to mark

Local grads not up to mark

KUALA LUMPUR: Graduates emerging from the national education system are failing to meet the expectations of prospective employers due to a lack of critical thinking skills and poor communication.

This has resulted in employers having to provide additional training to fit them into their respective job scopes while many graduates have to accept employment that does not correspond with their qualifications.

Malaysian-based education, human resource and recruitment consultants feel there is a need for a sound foundation in critical thinking to be incorporated into the education system to prepare future generations for the employment market.

Manpower Staffing Services (M) Sdn Bhd country manager Sam Haggag said there was a distinct gap between what the education system was producing and what employers were looking for.

“This has resulted in six out of 10 graduates from Malaysian universities taking as long as six months to find a job.

“The other 40% take even longer,” said Haggag, whose company provides workforce solutions that include recruitment and training.

“Recruitment is a distinct challenge as the universities are churning out graduates who don’t have the requisite skills to enter the workforce.

“The lack of proficiency in English limits their ability to communicate beyond the borders of Malaysia and this lowers their confidence and curtails their ability to add value in the workplace,” he added.

Hong Leong Bank chief human resources officer Ramon Chelvarajasingam said many new graduates lacked the critical thinking skills required to keep up in a constantly changing and increasingly competitive world.

These days, most employers look for graduates with a high level of confidence who were exposed to niche areas outside their academic studies.

Prospect Consulting Sdn Bhd director Nina Adlan, who provides advisory services to educational institutions aiming to set up branch campuses in Malaysia, said she had observed “a disconnect”’ between what graduates state on their curriculum vitae and what they are like in reality.

“When we hire, we consider the way graduates converse and portray themselves to be more important than what’s in the CV.

“What’s the point in having good academic results when they can’t communicate, can’t conduct a proper conversation and have no confidence?” she asked. — Bernama

The Railway Children - understanding the novel

We went for a course in teaching the Form 3 Novel last month. The course was quite helpful and I've learned a few techniques in teaching the novel, The Railway Children.

Among the best technique that I have applied in the class was to use strips of sentences containing descriptions of events from each chapter. The students have to read the descriptions and identified the sentences that are found in the chapters that they have been assigned to.

Activities :
A)Prepare strips of sentences containing descriptions of events from each chapter. Teachers then can cut the strips and jumble them up. Divide students into groups of 3, the groups are given names - group 1 to 8. The group will then read the chapters according to their group name. ie. group 1 will be reading chapter 1 etc. (assuming there are around 23 to 24 students in a class) The strips of sentence are then jumbled up and put on the table. Students are then asked to come forward and choose the strips of sentence that relate to their chapter assigned to them. The groups are then asked to paste the strips onto a mahjong paper under the corresponding chapter (Teacher will have to write the chapter no and also the title of the chapter)
 B) Discussion of the sentences that describe the chapter will be done when all the students finish identifying the correct strips and paste them on the mahjong paper. Teacher will have to go over the chapter - highlighting the important events that happen in each chapter. Teacher should also point out the moral values related to the event. Teacher explains the difference between moral values and themes - The technique in answering both questions. C) Task 3 : Ask students, in their group , to list the moral values found/lesson learnt in/from the novel.Underneath each moral value, list the evidence found in the novel. Make sure students write at least 2/3 evidence.

In brief, I think by doing this students who really listen should be able to understand the novel and answer the exam question. However, before carrying out this activity, make sure students have read the novel at least once.

Thank you to the group of teachers who have conducted the course and Curriculum Division in particular.

Moral values - The Railway children

Below are the summary of the what I was able to gather when I attended a course on the techniques in teaching the Form 3 novel, The Railway Children.in February 2012.  Thank you to all who have contributed to this course. Hopefully all of us will benefit from this.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1. To be responsible - responsible for their action of stealing the coal - Peter admitted that it was him who stole the coal, but the rest of the siblings also came out and wanted to be responsible too for that act .

Bobbie was also responsible when they first arrived at the white house, she went to find some coal and lit  the fire..

2. to be benevolent & generous - the old gentleman was quite generous when he donates food and medicine to the family whom he barely knew...

3. To show our appreciation - by giving gold watch to the kids for saving the passengers on the train

4. To be truthful - eg when they steal the coal

Themes in The Railway Children

Before you do this in your class, make sure:
1. Students have really read the book
2. Students knows all the characters in the book...

Themes in the novel
1. The importance of family ties
There is a strong bond in the family : eg Mother is always at home , Birthday of the family members are celebrated....etc

2. Being helpful and optimistic
Eg. Bobbie  and her siblings are very helpful- they were willing to help eg. when they realised that there was a landslide occuring and might be fatal to the train passengers, they risked their life to stop the train. Bobbie even stepped on the railway lines/track to wave the flags made from their own petticoat in order to make sure the train driver see her and stop the train.

Perk was also helpful when he helped to deliver the food and medicine to Bobbie's family.
Old Gentleman was helpful when he send them the food and medicine that Bobbie and her siblings asked for.

Bobbie was very optimistic that her father was not guilty and will be released..

3. The joys of childhood

4. Act of bravery

5. Coping with hardship

6. Resourceful and innovative - when they use their petticoats as flags to stop the train.

Task: Choose one theme. Then discuss in group one scene that best illustrate the theme. Role play the scene.

This is quite a task for the children - to act out the scene... would definitely be interesting to watch but might take a long time to complete : Suggestion as afternoon activities.

Credits to the team of teachers who have worked hard to produce the materials and also to those who have conducted the course. I would also like to say thank you to the Curriculum Development Division for the materials and courses organised.
Thank You .

The Railway children - important events

1) Ask students to identify them most important event or the event that changes where the story is leading to / or the climax...
Among the possible events would be :
1. When the father is taken away
2. Moving to the white house in the  country
3. Meeting the old gentleman
4. Mother falls sick
5. Saving the boy in th tunnel

.... but the most important event agreed upon was after the landslide, and when the children used their petticoat to stop the train from colliding with the rubble from  the landslide. After this incident, they met the old gentleman, face to face when they were given the gold watch as an appreciation for having stopped the train before anything bad happens to the train passengers.
This lesson is quite suitable for HEP students - Ask the students to report the events that happened during the event; Write in a way that would make the newspaper saleable.

Teaching ideas - The railway children

How do you start teaching The Railway Children. Well, here are a few tips to help you started.

1. Teaching the plots (series of events)
 a) Divide the class into 5 groups (eg).
 b) Group 1 is asked to read chapter 1&2; Group 2- chapters 3 & 5; group 3 - chapters 4&7; group 4 - chapter 6; and group 5 - chapters 8&9.
 c) Teacher will have to prepare strips of events; The groups of students are asked to find the strips of events that relate to their assigned chapters.
 d) After the students find the related strips, they have to paste it on board under the respective chapters.
 e) Teacher check their work.

2. Introducing the train
a) Jazz chants - students whisper " The train is coming..", .. group by group and each group ends with the sound of train complete with whistles...; the sound continues ... and starts after one another...

b) Then , teacher brainstorm for word cluster. words like train, railway track, railway lines, station.
Teacher then provides more difficult words related to train like : locomotive, engine , or even pictures of a train engine with its parts labelled.

What a wonderful world

The Prophet (pbuh) said: "Convey (my teachings) to the people even if it were a single sentence.." (Bukhari)

Death in Sujood on Her Wedding Night

The Prophet (pbuh) said: "Convey (my teachings) to the people even if it were a single sentence.." (Bukhari)

True strory told by Shaykh “Abdul Mohsen al Ahmad”, it happened in Abha (the capital of Asir province in Saudi Arabia)
“After performing Salat Al Maghrib, she put her make-up, wore her beautiful white dress preparing herself for her wedding party, Then she heard the Adhan of ‘Ishaa and she realized that she broke her Wudu
she told her mother : “mother, I have to go to make wudu and pray ‘Ishaa”
Her mother was shocked : “Are you crazy?!! Guests are waiting for you, to see you! what about your make -up? It will be all washed away by water!!” then she added:
” I am your mother and I order you not to perform salah now! wallahi if you make wudu now, I will be angry at you”
Her daughter replied :”wallahi I won’t go out from here till I perform my salah! Mother you must know that “There is no obedience to any creature in disobedience to the Creator.”!!
Her mother said:”what would our guests say about you when you’ll show up in your wedding party without make-up?! You won’t be beautiful in their eyes! and They will make fun of you!”
The daughter asked with a smile :”Are you worried because I won’t be beautiful in the eyes of creations? What about my Creator?! I am worried because, if I miss my salah, I won’t be beautiful in His eyes”
She started to make wudu, and all her make-up was washed away, but she didn’t care
Then she began her salah and at the moment she bowed down to make sujud, she didn’t realize that it will be her last one!
Yes! She died while in sujud! What a great ending for a Muslimah who insisted on obeying her Lord! Many people who heard her story were so touched!!
She put Him and His obedience first in her priorities, so He granted her the best ending that any Muslim would have!
She wanted to be closer to Him, so He took her soul in the place where Muslim are the closest to Him! Subhana Allah!
She didn’t care if she would be beautiful in the eyes of creatures so she was beautiful in the eyes of Her Creator!
O Muslim sister, imagine if you are in her place! What will you do? What will you choose : pleasing creations or your Creator?
O dear sister! Do you guarantee that you will live for the next minutes? Hours? Months?!!
No one knows when their hour will come? Or when will they meet angels of death? So are you ready for that moment?
O non hijab sister! What do you choose : Pleasing yourself by not wearing Hijab or pleasing your Lord by wearing hijab?
Are you ready to meet Him without Hijab?
And what about you, sister who are “in relationship” or “open relationship”, are you ready to meet your Lord today? Tomorrow?! What do you choose pleasures of this Dunya or pleasures of akhirah?!
May Allah guide us all to what pleases Him and grant everyone who is reading these lines good ending, Ameen.
