To be proficient in English....

Nowadays , people are talking about the standard of English which is deteriorating even though we have been introduced with many strategies etc,.... A lot of things have been done, but ... it seems that students still have lots of grammar errors in their writing etc, etc..

Well, for me, actually , we have to go back to the basic... . Language is not something to be learnt.. It is something that you have to acquire yourself... Look for example a  four year old girl.... If her mother speaks English with her, than definitely she is good in English.. meaning she can communicate using English..
Take another example, a sixteen year old girl .. a student who has learnt English for many years....7 +4 = 11 years... but do you think she can speak English well.... ??? I dont think so.... Why do you think that 16 year old girl cannot communicate using a language that she has learnt for many years...

The answer , for me, is very simple .... it's because the form four girl rarely uses English in her everyday life. She never speaks the language, rarely reads English books, sometimes write English Essays for her teacher but not because she wants to do it, but purely because she need to do it, or else.......  you know what will happen...

From my own experience, I think i learn English by reading English novels. I really love reading. I've been reading since I could read .. When I was 7 years old actually... I remember reading my first Malay Novel, Azman Anak Yatim. After that  I read a lot more books... BM of course.

When I got to secondary school, I got chances to read English novel. So I started reading English novels. Never had a day passed without me reading English novels. I remember the wardenMadam Salamiah and Madam Noriah, when making their rounds, after midnight, they would be calling out my name, ..... reminding me to sleep.. I really enjoyed reading..

Well during those days, we rarely watched movies, reading meant watching the movies but in our hearts and minds...So that is how I got to master English. and I think students nowadays should read more to be proficient in English.

So, what are you waiting for... Start reading, and writing ... and using English in your everyday  communication.... I guarantee you will improve your English in no time....

How I learn English?

Well, I remembered learning English at the age of 7. Still the real learning started when I was in Form 1. I still remembered how "jealous" I was with my friend whose uncle was generous enough to give her English story books as presents.

So how did I learn my English. Well , I have Mr Ong as my English teacher when I was in Form Five. During his time, we would always do exercises from the text book, and he will always be sitting at the teacher's table , marking our essays, I suppose.

Still my learning didn't stop there. I think it was my informal learning that helped me improve my English. For once, i had two pen-pals from Australia. They were Mandy Leigh Vale and i have forgotten the other one. We would always be writing to one another, exchanging gifts like T-shirts and so on. I love the friendship back then, it stopped when I furthered my studies overseas , in USA. She wrote to me, but i was too busy to reply back... I regret that.. Wonder where she is now..

Another thing I remember doing was reading novels. I loved reading novels... I could finish a 300 page book in only 2 to 3 days. Imagine reading while having my lunch or dinner, or way into the night.. Couldn't imagine those days???

Well, I have acquired a wide vocabulary then but one thing that i couldn't master was grammar. It was not until I took my KPLI course that I really learn my grammar. What I can say is that nobody likes grammar but it is very important that you learn it so that you can write well.....

That's all for now.....

How To Improve My Language Proficiency In English?

There are a number of ways every person can improve his/her language skills. Whether you are a professional or just a beginner, learning is a part of life. Here are some tips to help improve your English:

1) Reading - Spend time in reading. Whether it is books, magazines, or newspaper, reading is an excellent way to improve your vocabulary, and understanding of the language. Choose a book that meets your level of understanding of the language. Gradually, you can move on to more difficult ones as your English improves. Also, if you need to improve your basics, there are many grammar books that teach you how to make sentences etc. If you come across some words you don't know the meaning of, be sure to look them up in the dictionary.

2) Watch TV - Watching documentaries, sitcoms can help you improve your English. Pay special attention to how they speak.

3) Speak out loud, in front of the mirror or maybe with a friend or sister. This will improve your speaking skills and boost your confidence.

4) Try writing small essays, stories, or paragraphs on a regular basis. You may want to get it checked by a trusting individual who can provide positive criticism as to where improvements can be made.

5) Lastly there are some good websites that can teach you English for free. Be sure to search some up in Google and find one that meets your needs. Hope this helps, and best of luck.

How Can I Improve My English.

How Can I Improve My English...

That is a question asked by many students. For me, to improve one's English, there are four important ways to do so.

As we all know, learning a language is not like learning other subjects. This is because to score in most subjects, you need to expose yourself (by doing a lot of exercise)to the topics that are in the syllabus. Questions that will be asked are taken from the syllabus, without exception . The difficulties will be because you are asked to think before answering when the question is not straight forward.

However, it is different with languages especially English. To learn a language and to be good in a language, you need to be able to listen , speak, read and write well in English. You need to excel in these skills. Usually , you will be considered proficient in the language if you are able to express your opinion well in the language. This is done when you speak or write.

Many students are not able to either speak or write well.. There will always be errors everywhere. So we wonder what is wrong here. On the average, our students learn English for at least 11 years. Still , many are not able to write even one accurate paragraph.

Who is responsible for this low proficiency in English?

Well for me, both the teachers and students are to be blamed. Why? Teachers, because they are not able to provide suitable environment for the students to learn the language. Students also should be blamed because they should try their best to learn the language. This is because learning a language does not require you to study the language only, but you need to practise using the language. Practice Makes Perfect!

Consider this example. A eight year old, a Malay boy.. can speak English well. You might be wondering why. Well, actually he was raised in UK and go to school there. He doesn't have 11 years of schooling , still he talks like a British.

Well , what happen here? What makes him different from other Malay boy. Actually, it's the surrounding. He lives in London, and hears English being used all the time, and he has to use the language to communicate. So , what is important here is you have to use the language often (if not all the time) to be good or proficient in the language..

So , girls and boys.. you know now..how to improve your English. Please start right away..

Congratulation to SYTRA Tribune Editorial Board

Assalamualaikum w.r.t
First of all , I would like to congratulate the editorial board for being able to produce the second issue of SYTRA Tribune. If I am not mistaken, this is the first time an English Bulletin such as this is produced.
The main purpose of this bulletin is to give students the experience of reporting the events that happened every day in SMSTSP. Students will be exposed to journalism at an early age. This is a good exposure to them and of course it is one of the methods that can improve your English.
In Malaysia, an average student learns English for at least 11 years. If you are a Form 5 student, you have learnt the language for 11 years, but why aren’t you proficient in the language? Well, one main reason, in my opinion, is you never really use the language. You just learn it in class, but you don't practise it outside the class, at home, or at the hostel. . Of course, that is the main reason why students cannot improve on their proficiency level.
There are many theories that suggest this. Given below are proofs to my statement :
* Based upon the principles of Skinnerian behaviorism, RFT posits (suggests) that children acquire language purely through interacting with the environment.
RFT = The relational frame theory (Hayes, Barnes-Holmes, Roche, 2001)
* “Children learn on average 10 to 15 new word meanings each day, but only one of these words can be accounted for by direct instruction. The other nine to 14 word meanings need to be picked up in some other way. “
source : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Language_acquisition

Children learn, on average, ten to fifteen new word meanings each day, but only one of these words can be accounted for by direct instruction.[66] The other nine to fourteen word meanings need to be picked up in some other way. It has been proposed that children acquire these meanings with the use of processes modeled by latent semantic analysis; that is, when they meet an unfamiliar word, children can use information in its context to correctly guess its rough area of meaning.[66] A child may expand the meaning and use of certain words that are already part of its mental lexicon in order to denominate anything that is somehow related but for which it does not know the specific words yet. For instance, a child may broaden the use of mummy and dada in order to indicate anything that belongs to its mother or father, or perhaps every person who resembles its own parents, or say rain while meaning I don't want to go out.[67]

This means that a language is acquired not only by learning it but also by practising it . To acquire a language , you need to be good in these four skills - Speaking, Reading, Writing and Listening.
So today, I would like to suggest to my students to use the language all the time. What you can do will be :
1. Read materials in English - story books, magazine, newspaper etc
2. Write as much as possible - I would suggest that you keep a diary - a journal of your thought or what happened to you.
3. Listen well, especially when you watch movies, try to listen and understand the dialogue.
4. Speak the language - what else are you going to use the language for - except to communicate with others.

Lastly, we should always remember a quotation from a chinese philosopher, Lao-tzu , "A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step" which means that you should take that first step to achieve what you want even though every step is painful or just too difficult for you. You should start now ! You should also practise using the language every day as mentioned in the idiom "Practice Makes Perfect" which means the more you practise, the better you will become.

So, boys and girls, ladies and gentlemen, keep taking steps.... even if they feel like baby steps! Good Luck !!!
